High Point Cross Country Ski Center Offers Beautiful Winter Scenery and Exercise

High Point State Park is a popular place in the summer with the Lake Marcia swimming area and the monument peak but winter offers a whole other view with the leaves off the trees.  High Point Cross Country Ski Center, located within the park, offers a great way to see the park in its snow covered beauty with 5 cross country ski and snow shoe trails.  With 1600 feet elevation they have had 90 inches of snow this season (2013/2014) with current base depth of 18-20 inches. Most trails are 4-6 km (2.5 – 3 miles).   The trails are worked on in the summer so they hold snow better and then are groomed all winter.  The Monument Trail, recommended for snow shoeing, is 8 km (approx 5 miles) and offers the best views of NJ, PA & NY.

Tickets are either full day (9-4pm) or half day (1-4pm) ranging in price from $15 – $22. Equipment rental packages for skiing or snowshoeing range from $15 – $22.  Group and private lessons are offered on weekends and holidays.  There is a small lodge with a stone fireplace where you can get food and a nice cup of hot chocolate.  Operated by Hans and Kim, they have succeeded in providing a great experience.  This is a nice alternative to downhill skiing as it is much less expensive, less risk and no crowds.

crawfishfestYou don’t have to go to New Orleans to get the great food and funky soulful music.  Michael Aarone’s 24th annual Crawfish Fest at Sussex County Fairgrounds in Branchville NJ has it all. Food and music have equal billing at this event that started in 1989.  For the first time at the festival Grammy award winner Aaron Neville is the headliner who will be joined by his brother Charles on the horn.   I counted twenty performers that will be playing over the 3 day event that features zydeco, blues and jazz.  Your taste buds will delight in the Cajun delicacies that include crawfish, oysters, jambalaya, etouffee, Po-boys, shrimp & grist, alligator sausage, beignets and lots more.  New this year is a Food and Trade Expo showcasing Louisiana brands and products with sampling available. May 31 – June 2, 2013  For more info  The Sussex County Fairgrounds is 30 minutes from Alpine Haus B&B. We still have some rooms available for this weekend so check our availability and make your reservations soon before we are sold out.

Tips for First Time Guests at a Bed & Breakfast

pref inns (2)Our state bed & breakfast association, Preferred Inns of New Jersey, prints an annual guide featuring all participating B&B’s.  On the Welcome page they explain they require each Inn to meet professional guidelines and pass thorough inspections. They also list suggestions for a first time guests at a B&B.  Since we are next to Mountain Creek Ski & Waterpark and very near Crystal Springs Resort we have many first time B&B guests that choose to stay with us rather than the higher priced hotels at the resorts. I have always thought this list was a great idea and I am excited to share it:

  • Communicate your special needs to the Innkeepers, i.e., dietary, allergies, etc.
  • Ask if the Innkeeper has pets or if guests may have pets and children
  • Ask about check-in and check-out times and please communicate if your expected arrival time changes dramatically.
  • Most B&B’s are owner operated and do not maintain a 24 hour desk
  • Ask if there are late arrival procedures
  • Please do ask about the following:
    • Cancellation policies
    • Smoking policies
    • Amenities; Robes, hair dryers, air conditioning, etc.
    • Emergency contact procedures
    • Guest common areas
    • Breakfast procedures; serving times, menus, etc.
    • Things to do in the area and area restaurants

Most of this information is available on each B&B’s website so please take the time to read all the information they have provided.  Innkeepers are eager to make your stay enjoyable and memorable so let them know if this is your first time at a B&B.
